Picking a niche based on topics you are naturally curious about is good advice.

I’ve the made the mistake of taking writing projects on “popular” or “higher paying” niches. I ended up exhausted after researching and reading about them. Lesson learned - if you can’t even finishing reading an article, don’t bother writing it; move on and pick a topic of your interest.
